 Sorry this is so late but the jumper show ran long and I had a lot of work to do on the course and I just now got done scheduling those who pre-entered on-line.  If you talked to me or sent me an e-mail I may have very well forgotten you so you'll have to enter the old fashioned way ... when you arrive.  My alopogies but I am suffering from CRS Syndrome (Can't Remember Sh&T)

Anyway here's what I got trying to accommodate those who requested early times.

It looks like it is going to be a beautiful day for a Hunter Pace on Mon.  It's hard to imagine that while we're enjoying the farm and our horses so many have lost everything including their horses to the recent tornadoes in OK.  Since Mon is Memorial day, in addition to remembering the men and women who have sacrificed for our country, will be running the Spring Hunter Pace in memory of all who lost so much during the .  Stone Gate Farm is pledging 10% from every entry to be sent to fellow Eventers at Plain as Day Eventing whose farm was destroyed including all of their horses.   Click here to read more.

I hope to post tentative times for those who pre-entered on-line.  There is still time to enter on-line and request an approximate ride time and simple arrive on Mon and sign a release form, pay your entry fees and pick up your number.  Here's the link to the on-line registration.

Just a quick reminder that we will be having a Jumper Show & Derby on Sun that you may be interested in.  Click here  for more information.  We will not be putting the show jumps away after the show and we request that there be NO schooling of the show jumps.  Thank you.

Winona Competitor Pre-event Letter

Welcome to the Winona Horse Trials.   Please read the information below and even if you have been coming here for years please read as we have changed a few things.

• Entry Status, Start Times & Stabling Assignments: are now available on Start Box  please check to make sure we have you in the correct division and notify the secretary  asap if there is a problem. Also, if you see that your entry is NOT complete it would be greatly appreciated if you could get that taken care of before your arrival.
• Start times & stabling assignments will be available Wed. May 8th on Start Box.  The overall schedule currently was sent in a previous e-mail. Be sure to check the overall schedule in your program for the breaks when Show Jumping will be available for walking
• Results can be accessed anytime during the competition by going to the above link.  Be sure to send the link to family and friends who won’t be coming with you so they can keep up to date on you results.  If you have smart phone or an i-pad you can check your scores anywhere anytime.  Scores will be posted in the dome and and in the small metal building in the middle near the day parking.
• Packets: we will have express check in for those who have complete and correct entries.  There will be an alpha list and you can help yourself to your packet.  On Fri Express Check in will be available at the dome until dark and Sat at the front porch of the house. For those who don't have complete entries; you will have to check in with the secretary at the house.  Feel free to stop and park in the front parking field to pick up your packets before heading to the stabling area. Don’t forget pick up maps and programs. 
• Competitors who DO NOT have complete entries MUST have what they need to make your entry complete  before you will be given a number.
• We’re using Snap Snap Texting Service for all competitors, support crew and volunteers.  When you can’t hear the PA you can be notified of any changes to the schedule, posting of scores etc.  It’s quick and easy to sign up at here
• We will be using paper pinnies.  The plastic pinny holders can be purchased at the tack shop which will be on grounds
• Please note: The drive to stabling is ONE WAY!  DO NOT drive in the neighbor’s hay field!  They are generous enough to allow us to use their drive, please don’t jeopardize that by driving in their field. We are going to try to leave the drive open during dressage (we have done this for a year now and it works quite well if people are considerate) as a convenience to competitors and to keep horses off the cross country course as much as possible.  However we have a few requests:
• if there is a horse doing their test in Ring 2 (closest to the drive) please wait until their test is completed before going down the drive
• it is requested that people get to and from the warm up through the pasture/cross country course especially if you have a dog or child in tow ;)
• those who are in the day parking field are asked to access the warm up are via Schneider Rd.
• All levels  and divisions will be doing the A Dressage Tests 
• The shuttle service will be running on Sat. We will have pick ups will be at the house, near the ‘dome’  near stabling barn & stadium area or call Kevin @ 234-567-1952
• Awards:  All divisions will have ribbons through 8^th place and an award for 1^st place. In addition to the prize winners will receive a My Course Walk app for i-phones or i-pads and the winner of the "closest to optimum time" on cross country will receive their choice of  one set of MOJO FutureTech Performance Discs for your Horse or Dogs or A single Hologram  Performance Band. A $40 Value. Check out the  the MoJo FB page For those who may have to leave before picking up your ribbon there will be envelops available that you can address and leave with $2 for mailing the ribbon to you. There will be additional awards that will be listed in the program
• Stabling:
• Initial bedding of straw will be provided.  If you do not want the initial bedding and you did not indicate so on your stabling form please e-mail secretary@stonegatefarm.org ASAP If you would like to order shavings click here.
• The lights in the barn run off a generator and will be shut off at 11:00PM on Fri.  You may want to bring a flashlight or head lamp. Stalls 59 - 70 do not have lights
• All stalls have gates but some of the stall gates may be a little difficult use, but if you lift them up in the center they are much easier to handle.
• Stalls must be stripped to have the ‘muck check’ destroyed

• Satellite Map of the farm will help you find your way around the farm. Please refer to the map on the website so you know where you are going. For those who have been coming for years may want to check out the map as well as you will are getting to and from the dressage warm up differently than in years past.
• Stable area map to help you locate your stall(s) and parking (which will be tight)

IMPORTANT There are TWO road closures that may affect you. 

1. Road Closing for those who are traveling from the PA Turnpike. SR 165 is closed just west of SR 7. You will continue South on SR 164 to Columbiana and SR 14. You will turn right onto 14 but do NOT follow the detour when it turns right as it will take you out of your way. Continue west on 14 into the town of Salem and and turn left onto Lincoln Ave (traffic light, Chamber of Comerce on left) until you get to SR 45 (Circle K on the right, it only turns right and there's a light). Continue to the 2nd light and this will be SR 9.  
2. For those coming from the north on 534; it is close just south of I76.  Do not follow the detour; turn left (at teh light) onto Mahoning Ave and proceed east until you get to SR 45 and turn right or south.  Just north of Salem 45 makes a right onto a 4 lane road, SR 9 will be the 3rd light.

Cross Country & Show Jump Maps will be available at the start box and the in gate to show jumping.  The cross country courses are all available now at My Course Walk  

Be sure to stop at the camper to check out the pics from Brant Gamma Photography and while your at it be sure to stop in at the Discount Stable tack trailer.  If you're in need of a plastic pinny holder you can buy one there.  and a sales rep for CWD Saddles will be on grounds over the weekend and the sales rep for the

Winona Horse Trials ~ Updated May 7th

May 7th Update:

It's crunch time but just a few quick notes:

• we're re-instituting the dipping buckets in the stabling area to help prevent transmission of "bugs"
• the dressage arenas have new footing
• we have added sand to the bare spots in the final show jumping warm up
• we have purchased electronic timers for show jumping
• we have a MoJo is sponsoring a  "closest to optimum time" (with on jumping penalties) award.

I can't believe we're 2 days away from closing date and it was in the 20's this morning 3 days after reaching temps in the mid 80's!!! I'm hoping this wacky spring weather is why some of you have not entered yet.  Entries are way down from last year and we have openings at all levels and on grounds stalls still available. In all likelihood we will be accepting late entries but if you want to avoid a late fee be sure get your entry postmarked by Tues the 23rd or better yet enter via X Entry and send in your paper work & payment within 5 days.  Any entries accepted after closing date MUST be entered and paid for on-line.

April 21st Updates:

• Entry Status is now available on Start Box.  For those who have entered please check to make sure we have everything correct.  If you need to make any additions and or corrections please e-mail the secretary. If you entered via X Entry & do NOT see your name; it is because we have not yet received your paperwork and payment.

April 8th Updates:  If you have not already entered the Winona Horse Trials; April 9th is the last date to enter and still be eligible for the "early bird" discount.  There are openings at all levels and on grounds stalls are still available.  Also a reminder that the Starter division will run all three phases on Sat and are not required to pay the USEA starter fees.

Spring has finally decided to make an appearance in NE OH and the ground at Stone Gate Farm is nice and firm and that's not because it is frozen.  For those who have not been able to get out and about this spring;  please note that we are dry and allowing schooling (weather permitting) until April 21st.  After that date we will begin  moving fences into place for the event and no schooling will be allowed.

We are beginning to make updates on the courses, building a few new jumps and we are patiently awaiting the arrival of our new TR3 arena drag which levels, loosens and puts on a final finishing touch to better prepare the footing in all the arenas. 

This is NOT Dave or our farm ;)

Just a reminder that we will be hosting the Dressage Show & Test Clinic on May 4th.  And as always we are always in need of Volunteers.

March 26th Post:

It's hard to believe that today, March 26th, is the opening date for the Winona Horse Trials when there is snow on the ground!  But I have faith that spring will finally arrive soon and that we WILL have a great event in May.

I also want to remind you of a few perks for entering  early:

• all opening date entries will be eligible to win a full set of the Success in the Saddle DVD's volumes 1 - 4
• all complete entries that postmarked by April 9th will be eligible for the 'early bird' discount which is $20 lower than entries postmarked after that date
• all entries that are postmarked by April 9th are given an extra week to withdraw if necessary and receive a full refund less a $25 office fee
• early entries have a better chance of getting on-grounds stabling and requesting particular stalls or barns
• early entries make life easier for the secretary which makes for a happy secretary and happy secretary makes for .... well a happy secretary which is good for everyone ;)

We encourage all competitors to enter via X-entry but please remember that the entry form, stabling form (if applicable), cogging, payment and stall deposit (if applicable) must be received within FIVE days or the entry or it will be removed from the entry list until complete.  Here is the link to the Omnibus page for your review. I'm hoping to have the time to do our courses with the Course Walk app so that those of you with smart phones can walk your courses using a virtual map complete with pictures.  If anyone lives in the area and would like to get a sneak peek at the courses and would like to walk the courses with the course walk app and take pictures ... let me know.


TIP awards are back again this year.  To streamline the entry process, be sure to get your horse a TIP number and send it in with your entry.


As always we have a few new fences planned for this year.  The Preliminary corner will be replaced with a new friendlier version as well as a new sawmill table.  The farm is also sporting it's version on the 'Rolex log' without the carved squirrel and acorns ;)

Attention all TB Owners - Sign up for T.I.P. Awards

The inaugural season of the Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) was a huge success in 2012 and we were very happy to have both our recognized events be a part of this program that recognizes TB's as sport horses.

I was a little worried that our events wouldn't be selected again this year as so many show are now getting on board with T.I.P.  We are pleased to announce that both Winona & Stone Gate Farm Horse Trials have been selected as T.I.P. competitions. T.I.P. will be awarding a prizes and cash to the best placing TB in ALL divisions including the the Starter division.

You horse doesn't have to be an OTTB but in order to participate in T.I.P. classes and awards ALL horses must include a T.I.P. card.  This is new in 2013 and it will streamline the entire entry process.  I just registered 3 horses and it was quick and easy.

Fall Jumper Show & Derby

Last weekend weekend we held the last competition at Stone Gate Farm and fortunately the weather once again cooperated.  After some fairly heavy rains on Fri evening Sat turned out to be a beautiful crisp fall day.

There were jumper classes from Intro through Prelim with Derby Classes from Starter through Training. The Derby Classes included 16 numbered obstacles with the first and last portion of the course being show jumping with cross country in the middle.  Some of the horses were a little surprised to go from show jumping to cross country but they all seemed to enjoy the format. The winners received a great prize package from TRM Ireland  Barbara Peterson dominated the Beginner Novice and Novice Derby by winning both Derbies.  Kyle Smith won the Starter Derby with Debbie Busta's lovely gray 4 year old Merlin and Sue Hines won the Training Derby on long time partner Corporate Crash.  The Derby was also run as a team competition and the competition was fierce as the top two teams had 3 clean rounds each. The tie was broken by the team who was closest to the optimum time with the nod going to the Promised Land / SGF Team which consisted of Mark Knight, Jordan Delgross, and Kyle Smith.  Tay'sTeam of Tay Laster, Sue Hines, and Michele Jewett ended up second follower by Easy Riders, I got 99 Problems but My Horse Ain't 1 of Them and unfortunately the Pittsburgh Steeds (a 3 man team) had one of they riders have a Technical Elimination. 

Perhaps the most fun of the day was a bareback Gamblers' Choice Class.  Ah ... the lure of prize money ;)  The course was set at Beginner Novice height with the oxer rails removed  so all fences could be jumped both directions.  Riders had 60 seconds to jump as many fences as they could.  They were given a 30 second warning and there were a few audible groans that they were only half way through.  In the end Michele Jewett managed to jump 11 fences clean; one more fence than her competitors. Perhaps we won't allow a bareback pad the next time or give her a one fence penalty ;) There was a tie for those who jumped 10 fences clean and it was broken by the rider who managed to get from their last fence to the finish line fastest.  Wendy Campbell's smooth ride and a last fence that was right near the finish flags earned her 2nd place over Laura Kosiorek who probably could have won if her pony hadn't wasted so much bucking in between fences.  They get the award for being the most entertaining!  And I might add it was Laura's idea to offer this class.  It was unfortunate that she hadn't been able to ride her mare in nearly 2 weeks.  Watch out for them next time!!

For those who think, with a little practice, they could do the bareback jumping class; I say you better start practicing now.  I'm seriously thinking of adding this to the recognized horse trials for a little fun and good spirited competition!  I'm looking for sponsors now.
